Marine Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas in the Chagos Archipelago

چکیده

Summary Seabirds are declining globally and one of the most threatened groups birds. To halt or reverse this decline they need protection both on land at sea, requiring site-based conservation initiatives based seabird abundance diversity. The Important Bird Biodiversity Area (IBA) programme is a method identifying important places for birds agreed standardised criteria thresholds. However, while great strides have been made terrestrial sites, at-sea identification lacking. Chagos Archipelago, central Indian Ocean, supports four IBAs (tIBAs) two proposed marine (mIBAs). mIBAs seaward extensions to breeding colonies outdated information and, other types mIBA not explored. Here, we review extension using up-to-date status distribution use global positioning system (GPS) tracking from Red-footed Booby Sula sula – widely distributed seabirds archipelago identify any pelagic mIBAs. We demonstrate that due overlapping boundaries colony areas importance there single in Ocean lays entirely within Archipelago Marine Protected (MPA). Covering 62,379 km 2 it constitutes ~10% MPA if designated, would become 11 th largest world 4 Ocean. Our research strengthens evidence benefits large-scale MPAs predators provides scientific foundation stone biodiversity hotspot

Marine protected areas and pelagic fishing: the case of the Chagos Archipelago.

Most marine protected areas are only partially protected in that they commonly permit fishing, a primary ecosystem-distorting activity. Many indeed are no more than ‘paper parks’. The creation of no-take MPAs lags well behind several national declarations of intent and certainly lags behind need. A letter calling for more of these no-take zones has been signed by 250 of the world’s leading scie...

Avitourism and Australian Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas

Formal protected areas will not provide adequate protection to conserve all biodiversity, and are not always designated using systematic or strategic criteria. Using a systematic process, the Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA) network was designed to highlight areas of conservation significance for birds (i.e. IBA trigger species), and more recently general biodiversity. Land use activi...

Potential benefits to fisheries and biodiversity of the Chagos Archipelago/British Indian Ocean Territory as a no-take marine reserve.

On 1st April 2010, the British Government announced designation of the British Indian Ocean Territory--or Chagos Archipelago--as the world's largest marine protected area (MPA). This near pristine ocean ecosystem now represents 16% of the worlds fully protected coral reef, 60% of the world's no-take protected areas and an uncontaminated reference site for ecological studies. In addition these g...

Male hatchling production in sea turtles from one of the world’s largest marine protected areas, the Chagos Archipelago

Sand temperatures at nest depths and implications for hatchling sex ratios of hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) and green turtles (Chelonia mydas) nesting in the Chagos Archipelago, Indian Ocean are reported and compared to similar measurements at rookeries in the Atlantic and Caribbean. During 2012-2014, temperature loggers were buried at depths and in beach zones representative of tu...

Patterns in reef fish assemblages: Insights from the Chagos Archipelago

Understanding the drivers of variability in the composition of fish assemblages across the Indo-Pacific region is crucial to support coral reef ecosystem resilience. Whilst numerous relationships and feedback mechanisms between the functional roles of coral reef fishes and reef benthic composition have been investigated, certain key groups, such as the herbivores, are widely suggested to mainta...
